Change in our lives and work has accelerated, the Internet has made information easily accessible: books, courses, training sessions. You can all read it online or watch it on youtube. Still, more people get stuck, they burn out, start leading an unhealthy lifestyle because of other pressures or find it difficult to focus their personal development journey because there is too much choice.
I am convinced that we do not get stuck because we have a lack of information or a lack of knowing ‘the top 5 things’ we ‘should do’ to achieve ‘something’. Instead, we seem to get stuck in what we think or feel about ourselves in real situations we face in life and work. In short: a book or a course can give you knowledge, but does not help you integrate this into your daily live and experiences, nor does it speak back to you, or challenge you. After all, you are a unique individual human being with your own story and background.
At the same time, the internet has changed the world economy. This will affect you whether you are employed, self employed, or unemployed. Jobs are no longer ‘for life’, job searching has been tremendously influenced by social media and companies struggle to survive, and in turn re-organize and require quick adaptation of their staff to a ‘new world’. In this new internet driven world there are some important parts that -in the end- make our own lives more difficult:
The domino effect of all this is that we face more complex problems and challenges in work and live than before. We have less rest, need to work longer hours to keep up, make choices more quickly and also still find meaning, purpose and joy in our lives.
And that is where coaching and counseling can help to propel your forward or get un-stuck.

In short, coaching is often directed at learning new skills, looking towards the future and working on goals in that future. In counseling psychology there often is a blockage, conscious or unconscious that keeps a person stuck in either a certain behaviour pattern; these patterns in turn can create anxiety, stress, and emotional dis-balance.
In both the Netherlands and Belgium (where I work), for a coach to be registered he or she needs to have a masters degree in coaching. A counselor needs to have an additional masters degree in Counseling Psychology (that’s for example the route i followed after my initial studies in European Studies at the University of Amsterdam).
